Team History
- 2001: Langley Robotics Team 611 founded by Mr. Belyea
- 2002: Nobody really remembers what happened this year. Moving on.
- 2003: Ms. Lindsey takes over as sponsor of the team, which then had around 8 members
- 2004: This year marked Langley's first qualification for the elimination rounds of a FIRST Robotics Competition. We began an almost unbroken streak of quarterfinal qualifications or better from this point forward.
This year also marked the birth of Langley's unique robot-naming scheme. Each robot since 2004 has been named after Otto, our school's mascot. About halfway through, we decided that we liked Otto IV the best, so our most recent robots have been named 'Otto IV the Third' and 'Otto IV the Fourth.' Despite growing support for the name 'Sven, Feller of Trees,' we plan to stick to Otto for the foreseeable future. - 2005: Mr. McHugh takes over as Teacher sponsor of the team. By this point, Langley robotics has grown from a humble eight-person endeavor into a team of about 50 members. This was the first year that Langley attended any competitions other than the VCU competition (now renamed the Virginia Regional). We went to Both VCU and Annapolis from '05 to '07
- 2006: Quarterfinalists! Woo!
- 2007: Mr. Statz is the Robotics Team Sponsor this year
In addition to once again making quarterfinals, Langley was also a proud winner of the Website Excellence award this year We had the great priviliege of attending the 2007 international FIRST Robotics Competition championship in Atlanta's Georgia Dome this year and are looking forward to going back to the Championship in the near future. - 2008: Mr. Franks, our current Lead Sponsor begins working with the team We were once again quarterfinalists at the Annapolis competition this year.
- 2009: A large portion of the team had graduated by this point, leaving the once massive, 60-member peak robotics club with about ten members. Nonetheless, we made a formidable effort and performed admirably at the first ever FIRST Robotics Regional in Washington, DC.
The team's activities this year included the now infamous 'Robotics Weekend' where five members put in a remarkable 300 man-hours over the course of a three-day weekend to finish our robot in time for the shipping date.
As a post-season activity, this year's team mounted a chair and joysticks atop our robot (replacing a ball-lifting tower and turret mechanism) and drove it around. We were invited to the annual Great Falls Festival, where we gave supervised rides and demonstrations to children and adults in the community while raising general awareness about FIRST and Langley Robotics. - 2010: The almost brand new (less than five returning members out of thirty) Langley Robotics Team achieved record team success by reaching semifinals at the Virginia Regional for the first time in team history, only losing after three riveting tie-breaker rounds of competition.
- 2011: The team swelled to record breaking sizes this year, boasting an exciting (and record-breaking) 95 members. That's almost 5% of the school!
